Well on the way home today on Northshore my gearbox decided to develop a knock, I was not sure if I would make it home. 250-300 klm
I did make it but only just, It got to the point that any bit of gas on I thought it would let go. The last 15 klms was very touch n go whether it would make it home.

After seeing the flogging you gave it at Stockton I'm not surprised, but you did say you've been driving that way for the last 15 years, so I think you got your money's worth. Good to hear you made it home

That box got built when engine was built, yeah about 15 years ago. but has had 1 rebuild since. 15 yrs but only 13 000 klms so 6500 hard klms per build. Still happy but

I just going to take it apart first and have a look see if its reparable. Has anyone got a detailed book on these gearboxes, that be a good start. I kinda like this one. Its a different problem than the last 2 times.

Good Friday pfft, Pulled engine & Gearbox out today. Drained oil and bang a piece of tooth on drain plug, so for those who picked it, pfft aswell. If I get a chance I will try pull box apart to inspect.

Ok I pulled box apart today and all gears are good, Pinion gear, well lets say a bit of tooth decay. 1 complete tooth gone and 2 halves gone. will take a photo and post in morning. So all in all I think good news.

I should say better than expected, all the gears 1,2,3,4 have no damage (from broken pinion gear floting around) spider gears no damage, crown has some damage but can grind high spots if cant find replacement.
I honestly expected the box and housing to be stuffed from the knocking that came out of it.
Reverse gear a bit scored on the ends of the teeth but thats from me not picking 2nd at times.

Yes the last few klms home was a bit plain to say the least. Kieth I would like to keep same ratio 4.125 , dont have one in your back pocket ha. I think its out of 69/70 irs beetle. Do you know if the automatic beetle use same crown & pinion because I read that is also the same ratio.
