AS0031 - Andrew - Meyers Towdster

Postby OzTowdster » Mon Dec 22, 2008 4:58 pm

Name - Andrew
Manx Club Number - AS0031
Location - Brisbane, Australia
Buggy Type - 69 USA Meyers Towdster
Current Buggy Status - Under restoration

From the moment i first saw this car at Valla in 99 i decided o n the spot that one day i would own it sooner or later , fast forwarding to 2001 on the way to Cape york with the then owners Kevin and Barb i was welcommed to have my first drive of the Towdster and to say it is an experience unlike any other buggy i have ever driven is an understatement .
You sit in that tiny cockpit shoulder to shoulder with you passenger ( you can just imagine Bruce and Ted bouncing shoulders together down Baja ) , put the foot down and feel its super light weight front end lift before you with its then power from a angry 2lt type 4 ,woh what a rush , vision is also something outa this world with the front wheels in full vision right out the door in front of you which i was to learn in years to come was a great asset in wild offroad work .
With cape york adventure over in late 2002 kevin was thinking of selling the Towdster as he had replaced it with a more convensional Sharpbuilt GS Limo ,so we struck a deal and i picked the Towdster up at Valla that year .
The frist 12 months were a turbulant time with the new toy home in Qld as the much feared queensland transport dept wanted nothing to do with this car as it was registered as " HOMEMADE " in NSW which QTD does not reacognise , doh doh doh . Finally after talking to the right people all ended up being sweet with Qld rego granted as a Towdster .
For the next 18 months i did quite a few miles in the Towdster with a couple of trips to stockton dunes including one over the Easter break with a side trip to Nationals , but late in 2004 was not to be good time for the wild little yellow car with a smash on the north end of Fraser isl between the front right corner of the Towdster and Baja Tims left side of his baja .
Although still driveable it was decidede at this point that mabey it would not be a bad thing if a full rebuild was completed as the rh fiberglass needed repairing anyway and the yellow and purple paint sceem was staring to look a little dated ( gota love the 80's ) so it was pulled down with the then plan of having it back on the road in approx 12 months .........................
Well what can i say , here we are 4 years later and althoug quite a bit has been done and bought it is probabley still 12 months away from being completed
Any way heres some old photo's and a couple in its current state

I've been in Andrew's Towdster back when Kevin owned it. He took my for a spin on Stockton sand dunes, and I can tell you now, it's an insane little car. I've also seen it abused by Andrew many times (the top pic in his post was taken from my Baja) and it really is an amazing little car.

The most impressive display was when Terry purposely tried to bog it on the beach and couldn't!
