58 Baja

Postby Mackaybaja » Mon May 16, 2016 1:54 pm

Hi all its been a while been mucking with the Baja again fitting nice big air cleaner and 2 m x 2 m awning to sit under. This air cleaner should keep the dust at bay compared to the large K&N which would block quickly in heavy dust. In time to come the 58 pan will be replaced with a 76 pan/2.5 quad cam and subi box but for now it will stay VW. :)

Hi Smiley and bajabone i wanted to put larger air cleaner on but it was physically to big but this will  do. The front end is out again fore a bit of tlc lp/kp some heaver torsion leaves as well. When the 76 chassis is ready all mods will be done no more i will just change this or modify that  and like bajabone said it will be fast / smooth / quiet and economical. Bajabone would you have some pictures of ware you have mounted your radiator. Thanks Keith

Thanks bajabone that is food for thought. Smiley do mean like i need to do the tappets again or is that a new noise ware is that oil coming from must have oil in it still dripping :D as for not a VW there is not much that is original anyway and i don't know how many Klms you drive your VW type3 but my wife and i clock up heaps every year as this is our favorite vechical to travel in. Most trips are no less than 2200 klm and if you have ever traveled in a Baja any distance you realise they are quite noisy inside and uneconomical. The 2276 has plenty of power even with the aircon but only gets around 6.5 to 8 klm per ltr so it has to go plus i am sick of rebuilding transmissions due to bearing failures.

Hahahaha! You're funny now! You don't have to do tappets on a Type 4, hydraulic baby!! And if you put them together properly they don't leak. My Kombi hasn't lost a drop!

Your planned build sounds like a really nice combination Keith, & very sensible idea to set it up on another pan for a lot less time off the road :) All the best with it, Pud

Not going to take it of the road till everything is ready as for tappets your actual beetle Baja does not have hydraulics tappets and to be honest i haven't had a oil leak or anything go wrong for 30,000 klm . If the trip to tassie comes of you will be in your beetle Baja the real Baja

..Oh.... Was kind of hoping to check out Alyce in the flesh & see what she'd do, but makes sense to do Tassie in a baja bus....recon can find plenty of Kombi challenges ....as long as we can somehow prevent it doing a Houdini & disappearing in the soft stuff :P :D
Probably need to start talking about this Tassie run soon if anyone's still keen.....I'm happy to open book yaffle here on a forum thread if you guys like, (...might happen to entice others to join in...) or can pm email addresses/ phone details if preferred, what-ever's easiest :) Pud
