The Buggy / Baja Toolbox and what to have in it.

Postby Brad » Sun Aug 14, 2011 6:45 pm

As more and more people come into the buggy world and the buggies they drive get older and older it has become more important than ever to carry a good selection of tools and spares to help you get home. Another great reason is that gone are the days when you would break down and every second person would stop to help out and have a tool box of their own. Now most people just have a mobile phone.

So anyway below is a list of what fellow buggy heads think you should carry.

Tool Kit:
  • 36mm Knock Spanner
  • Hammer
  • Cable Ties
  • Duck Tape
  • 10, 13,17,19,21mm spanners
  • Torch
  • Side Cutters
  • Pliers
  • Pump
  • Rope
  • Tie Wire
  • Jumper Leads
  • Leatherman or similar Multi Tool

Spares Kit
  • Spark Plugs
  • Spare axle nut
  • Spare IRS Pivot bolt and washers
  • Rag
  • WD40
  • Fuses to suit your buggy / baja
  • Spare Tyre in a Can (SpareAir)
  • Accel Cable
  • Clutch Cable
  • Electrical Crimps
  • Fuel Line and Clamps
  • Electrical Wire
  • Rubber Brake Line ( front and Rear)
  • Fuel for longer trips

Recovery Kit
  • rated shackles
  • Snatch Strap
  • Small shovel

Please post any input in this thread and I will keep the list updated from them. Hopefully the end result will be a list you can print out and use for reference.

Spare fan belt and make sure it fits.
A multi meter, if not a multi meter then a test light, you would be amazed what you can diagnose with a test light.
Spare points, even if you have an electronic module, if it fails you're stuffed.
High tension coil lead plus your longest spark plug lead.
Spare fuel filter.
Screw drivers.
Syphon hose.
Engine oil.
Drinking water (or beer :P )
Water if you're water cooled.
Radiator hoses.
Fencing pliers can be the greatest things out. I don't know how many times I've stolen a single strand off a barb wire fence

Leatherman or similar Multi Tool
Hose clamps

And because I'm a grammar and spelling nazi, it's "Duct Tape", the grey sticky stuff used to tape insulated tubes to heating/cooling vents, etc.; not the quacking kind.

Just on a side note there is a brand of duct tape called Duck Tape, also note there is duct tape like a wide flexible heavy duty insulation tape that fridge mechs use and also "100 mph" tape, fabric reinforced with excellent adhesive qualities properly known as gaffer tape, both are handy to have :)

Would it not be a good idea as we get closer to leaving, that we share out a lot of the tools and spares between us otherwise everybody ends up carrying a tonne of gear that we don't really need, I realise some people are going to want to be independant to some degree but we don't all need to be carrying jumper leads, 36mm knocking spanners, kits of sockets, spare coils, brake fluid, oil an the likes.

Just food for thought but it would need to be properly organised.
