Subarugears 5 speed in 1962 VW Beetle

Postby MANTA01 » Sat Apr 14, 2018 6:08 pm

Has anyone on here got a Subarugears 5 speed in their VW.?

In conversations over the years I have heard mentioned "Subarugears 5 speed" are the way to go for any suped up VW engine, whether its a Kombi, Beetle, Buggy or want ever.
I have also heard '76 and later Kombis used the 091 gearbox, 6-rib, is geared better for the 2L, and is the toughest of all VW gearboxes,
But this is not able to be used on 1600/1700/1800 engines without chopping and changing bits to suit... replacing the input shaft being one of them.

My question is if you have a early 1962 Beetle, with a Swing Arm, with a suped up engine ...

Can you fit a Subarugears 5 speed. ?

How much do Subarugears 5 speeds cost to fit. ?

Is there a gearbox besides a Subarugear that would suit. ?

Price of Subarugears box is on Todds website. Don't know the time it takes to fit one as never done one but wouldn't take much longer to fit than standard if the mounting brackets to suit where purchased as well. 3 and 5 rib boxes are fine for buggies /baja's. The 2 litre 6 rib box and 1800 5 rib box just need the input trimmed 15mm 'I Think" off to fit type 1 engine or not all all with a EJ subi. My next project is definitely be getting the Subarugears box and Ej25 motor.

First of all you would need to convert your chassis to IRS to use either the Kombi gearboxes or the Subarugears box

Return to “Engine and Driveline”
