kombi box crownwheel reversal

Postby PUD » Thu May 14, 2015 12:52 pm

Had some wierd thoughts since a slow rocky run recently :? from memory in the early swingers it was possible to turn the crownwheel to reverse the axle rotation....am curious to find out if this is do-able in a 3 rib 1600 irs box (without the reverse cut etc) .....(forgive me, but it has been mentioned on here before that there's no such thing as a silly question  )

The answer is no.
My Kombi Ute used to have reduction boxes that were modified to have a cv flange. But the whole gearbox was flipped upside down to reverse it.

Would love to see a pic of the setup :) not sure how it would work bolting it up to a modified arm... Don't recon will do anything but just looking at the possibilities, as don't do much long haul road work & even with the 1600 box, still tends to be a bit tall in the gearing in the tight stuff. As you'd already know, reduction hubs would tick a few boxes, i.e. get an extra bit of lift, straighten out the driveshaft angle, & with the inertia of the axles turning the opposite way tends to make the ass end lift (providing more clearance) when you boot it....maybe a stock subi 5speed to couple up...axle lengths might be an issue... also heard mention there's potentially a difference in the very early model to later reduction hubs, potentially the spline size??

Cool, guessing they're still fitted? Nice to see they've lasted ok, not something that gets modified & only lasts a few hundred K's, any end loads on the bearings by the cv's/ shafts etc must be ok :) Extra unsprung weight of fitting em on a buggy might be something to think about, also poking a few extra hp at em, although the gears themselves look pretty chunky

The reduction boxes were removed from our ute before we got it as the wheelhop with the 3.8L V6 was too much
