If it makes power or helps it get to the wheels this is where it is at

Well actually Todd the motor is out of a manual and does have the guide on the crankshaft pulley, so it is a bit of a mystery, other than the tensioner is probably suffered.
Anyway the good news is both cylinders are back to full compression now that the timing is correct. So once I come back from our road trip to Cains, I will replace all the stuffed idlers and tensioner, wack in the new timing belt and it will be back to normal. :-)

Can't see the guide in your photos but yes...that is great news. Subaru....unbreakable....almost. Best make sure that hole is sealed up so no nasties can get in to your cam belt area. Bugger you pulled the engine out first.

Yeah the guide is on the bench :-). Rang a Subaru spare parts place and they were busy, said they would call back, but of course they didn't.

Bloody sneaky having the guide on the bench.
Just email that Subaru spare parts place with what you need and they'll put it all together for you and a quote.
There's a contact section on their website.

Sweet that is a good score! I've had bike motors at work that have dropped cam chains so I have just pulled the head expecting the worst and not bent a valve at all! Very lucky! Saves you a few bucks there mate!
It will all be ok in the end.. if is not ok its not the end!

Taking it you're still in Cairns, looking forward to hearing how it turns out when you return :)

So I have finally got this thing back together and with the new timing gear on it is running fine. Certainly an easier and cheaper fix than having to do the head !

The motor is going well, except that it idles really low. When you stop it goes to where it should idle, sits there for about 10 seconds and then slowly drops really low and runs somewhat rough. If you give it a tiny bit of throttle it will happily sit at 600 or 700 rpm. Any ideas ?

Sticky Idle valve maybe? A can of subaru upper engine cleaner usually improves the idle smoothness on mine.
